Résumé de la conférence:

In the past three decades political parties in established parliamentary democracies have confronted three strong trends that change their relationships to supporters: declining voter loyalty, declining party membership, and the declining importance of cleavage politics. This talk will highlight two organizational responses to such challenges: the expansion of intra-party democracy and the introduction of new forms of party membership. These two responses create potential conflicts between traditional party activists and those with looser ties to the party. The talk examines the different ways that parties in the UK and Canada have tried to manage such conflicts.
