 Présentation

What is Deliberative Democracy, really? Is it a new form or a possible model of democracy, that runs counter to or stands alongside and integrates with, other forms or models? Or, more simply, is it only a set of new participatory techniques and methodologies? And what distinguishes it from Participative Democracy?
Is the theoretical model of Deliberative Democracy able to offer a comprehensive overview of the problems which affect contemporary democracies?  Or does it merely represent a niche of small participative experiences, devoid of any political importance? And how can a deliberative theory of democracy today contribute to the enrichment of democratic thought?
The book deals with these questions by following two closely intertwined paths: on the one hand, it presents and discusses some of the most recent and innovative contributions to the development of a deliberative theory of democracy (in particular, the proposal of the concept of “deliberative system”); on the other hand, it tests these theoretical categories through comparative analysis of some decision-making processes, which have been deeply embedded in real-world politics and conflicts and have been characterized by the creation and utilisation of specific participative and deliberative devices.
